Catered

Many halls of residence (and colleges) are catered, which means that you pay for certain meals (usually no more than two a day) as part of your rent. Your rent’s higher as a result, whether you eat the meals or not.

And you may find that you don’t all that often.

Breakfast tends to be over by 9am, which for many students is abominably early. (We’re sure they’re all working really late…)

Then the evening meal (dinner, supper, tea, whatever you call it) is often served at pretty rigid — and pretty early — hours.

As for the quality — that can be the final turn-off that means you end up paying for meals that you never eat. And then you pay for truckloads of chocky Hob Nobs because you’re always hungry.

But the good thing about catered accommodation is that food becomes one less thing to worry about. You have a balanced diet (unless you opt for the chips every night) and you know that however broke you get, there’ll still be food on the table.

But if you’re thinking about catered accommodation, try to find out how many meals you get for your money, whether you can get a rebate on meals you don’t eat and what kitchen facilities there are for making your own late night snacks when it’s been six hours since your last meal.

Ultimately, if the thought of institutional food doesn’t set your saliva buds oozing, then you may want to consider your accommodation options — even your university options — with your stomach in mind (if that’s not a mixed metaphor).
